list of possible knocks.

Wed 17 Sep 2014 08:58:41 AM
rightio gents.

as per the info thread i have checked and replaced 90% of all the possible causes of the rear knock.

fuarking not got a clue, its driving me mad now.

i could drive all day and not hear it, but if i get out of the car, or in it, "knock"

rage face.

ice changed sway bar links, removed parcel shelf, removed metal plate on bonnet...... it seems to be coming from the passenger side rear of the car...

link bushes maybe?!?!

only thing i havent changed bar the sway bar d bushes.

throw the list of knocks up youve sorted and the culprit. might help me and other out as our cars get older.

Mine drove me nuts for ages. I had a knock in the rear which turned out to be my rear muffler hitting my whiteline panhard bar over bumps.
I replaced droplinks and swaybar d bushes thinking it was those.

Check your toolkit in the boot, they bounce around, same with a loose jack.

I was about to say the same thing as Jon.

Hangers for the exhaust seem to sag constantly on mine and end up allowing the exhaust to knock on the panhard rod and the axel.

If you look at Ciscos original panhard rod in the thread below (in the pic posted Thu 11 May 2006 04:47:05 PM) you can see that the original design whiteline did for him had a bend on the left hand side to get around the rear axel and also allow the whole thing to sit a lot lower. It seems to sit parallel with the gound rather than diagonally like I'd expect all of ours do.

There are so many times now I have thought about bending the adjustable panhard rod that I have to match his design. It just hasn't happened yet.

Another thought, check the catch that the tailgate locking mechanism latches onto. If you've lost the rubber that used to cover that metalic loop, it is well worth it to just put some elctrical tape or similar around it so that it insulates the metal-on-metal knocks and squeeks over bumps from the catch.

I had some bad rear end knocks after changing the suspension.
It turned out that I hadn't put the bushes in between the shock top and the car body. I had 2 on the top and none below. Ooops!
So I've now got 1 above & 1 below.
