Unheard of starting problem1

Please help with this very intermittent starting problem I am having with my 1995 Micra SLX.
The car ALWAYS starts first time, but sometimes just dies within 1 sec. Starting with more throttle just means it revs higher - then dies within 1 sec again.
Sometimes there is some clicking from down by the throttle pedal - a relay ?
Eventually after starting between 5 - 15 times the engine will fire - the revs will drop slightly like it is going to die, then changes its mind and revs to normal idle speed.
The problem will then not reoccur for weeks - sometimes months.
I don't think it's a fuel thing, at least not a flooding issue - (I sometimes have to do the pull the fuel pump fuse thing to get over this on my sons micra).
Could this be a ecu or sensor problem?
Any ideas welcome.

Fuel pump or fuel pump relay... Or faulty idle air valve... Or... A multitude of other things.

the ignition switches tend to fail, but i guess the dash lights would show if it did ?
and the ecu relay is near the battery, so you would,nt hear that click from the cabin

Check your injectors, had a similar issue with mine

Did you end up finding the problem, mate? I'm having very similar issues with mine at the moment..
