Opened up the intake with cold air piping (65mm plumbing pipes) and fitted an ajdjustable fuel regulator. Bumped the fuel pressure up to 43-44psi.

Fitted Bosch Super 4 spark plugs with all 16 electrodes gapped out to 3mm.

Changed the usual fluids and filters.

Running 98 RON fuel with advanced timing. The car drives with a lot more pickup now, but with a slight flat spot around 2,300-2,400rpm.

I still use the original air box, blocking out the majority of the heat and opening up the inlet to at least 65mm. The pipe goes down to almost below the engine to suck in some fresh air. The inlet and outlet of the pipe ends are both flared out.

Fitted up a rear brace that bolts up at the rear seat belt points.

Thanks to Nas for this.

This has reduced flex in the rear of the car. Prior to fitting it, I could hear squeaking in the rear, from what I presume was the tailgate rubbing against body rubber as the car flexed.

It runs well at 43-44psi.
No black smoke. No stinky fumes. No bogging down. Decent pick-up too.

The wheels are 14x6. Tyres are rubbish 175/65's.
Going to replace them with 185/55's when I burn these down.

I got the car in December last year (3 months ago) and still haven't washed it yet :D

More of the intake details:

Started with some 65mm plumbers piping from Bunnings. I utilised the 45 degree joiner instead of this 90 degree join picture here.
The Sikaflex is used to join the pipe into the airbox.

Looking from the top down.
Here, I have used the heat gun and melted the pipe in slightly so as to give room to the clutch cable and not push on it.

And finally, the pick-up section down below.

Has it made a difference?
I feel that it has, however there is a slight flat spot around 2,300-2,400rpm. It sounds a hell of a lot nicer too. If you didn't see the video above, I'll save you some searching. Here it is:

http://youtu.be/X8d6kEtwv2I

This is with a 100% stock exhaust too.

Haha... This is my daily and I'm trying to keep it as "budget" as possible :)

Paint "should" end up something along the lines of this with a black bonnet and dark tints.
Please excuse the dodgy MS Paint Brush effort.

I'm seeing double haha. BigJohn it's looking good. Are you going to follow the line in the body and paint the top of your front guards?

With tint. My old Cedric had factory tint or privacy glass (whatever you want to call it) and I got 20% put over that so it was probly more like 5%. It looked pimp but at night time if you tried to look out the drivers side window. It reflected all the dials. You could see how fast you are going, but not your mirror. So do what you want, I just wanted to share my experience with really dark tint.

My plan at this stage is as you said, follow the line of the body, painting the tops of the guards black with a black bonnet.

I had a Soarer some years ago with 5-10% tints on it. It was fantastic during the day, but when it came to driving at night in the rain, I hated the tints. I'd have to put down both front windows when pulling up at intersections to see if there were any oncoming cars.
On my Falcon, I have 15-20% and it's perfect for night & day.

Wow that looks sick. Nice work. Surprised about the white wheels thought you would have gone black, they still look good I like the style. How did you do the bonnet and are the vents just stick on.

Also what are you doing with the super s front bumper now.

Thanks Derek.

The bonnet vents are real.
These were the bits that DanVillan sold.

See:
http://micra.com.au/community/message.php?messageid=82211

Rebelsan, I went for white wheels as I don't like black wheels on red cars. I'm looking at a different direction with the paint job now. A colour that will go with white wheels. Only time will tell what pans out :)

Here are the vents from outside:

Can't remove the steering wheel and don't have a dedicate steering wheel puller kit?
Improvise! Big John's ghetto steering wheel removal!

Use a steering wheel lock and an OEM style scissor jack.
1. Remove the steering wheel horn cover. Spray some WD40 onto the centre nut and then loosen the steering wheel's centre nut. Do not remove the nut.
2. Set the steering wheel lock in place (as central as possible across the steering wheel).
3. Position the top jacking point of the jack onto the steering wheel's centre shaft and the bottom against the steering lock.
4. Turn/open the jack. If the steering wheel isn't too tight, it 'should' pop. If not, open the jack until the steering lock seems like it's bending. At this point, hit the back of the steering wheel with a rubber mallet and this should make it pop.

Then replace the wheel.
I got an Autotecnica Maloo M Spec wheel off eBay.
Meets ADR requirements and has a padded centre to avoid defects.

While I was at it, I fitted a short-shifter (the gear changes are now much shorter and nice and notchy. Gear shifts are still easy to gate and has had no negative effects at all.)
I also replaced the gear knob and boot with more items from eBay.

Little bit of body work to repair that damaged rear quarter and get through the rego inspection. Suspension also fitted.

Yep! Handles much better now. Rear end is nice and tight with the right amount of stiffness. The front however, could do with less body roll.
Might look at front sway bar sometime in the future.

front sway bar will alter the rear end of the car sir.

if the front is understeering, you want a rear sway bar.

I wouldn't say understeering, but it is definitely leaning around corners.

In my experience that's only with aero parts or more ground effects like on le mans cars. A bigger front sway bar will only affect the front. Don't mean to argue just my opion.

27mm Whiteline front swaybar on my Falcon has made a world of difference. Much better turn in, a heap less body roll and it's made the car feel like a smaller car. Had no noticeable affect on the rear.

Adjustable Whiteline bar on my WRX made their handle like a go kart. It just sat so flat and felt so tight around corners.

Re-drilled the original WRX higher and used a 65mm bolt with some big nuts behind it as support - This is for the front right hand side of the passenger seat.

Comparison of old vs new.
Driver's seat with the stock Super S seat and sheep skin seat cover next to the WRX seat.

Some people have stated that the had issues fitting the WRX seats into the Micra as the rails would hit the lower seat belt rail.
The way around this is easier than you think. You need to slide the WRX seat rails all the way back, as though a tiny person were driving with their face against the steering wheel. This way, the rails are all the way back.

First problem with WRX seats in the Micra:
1 - The driver's side door bin WILL hit the height adjusting / quick release lever, preventing you from closing the door.

My work-around to this is to cut off/remove the large/main section of the door bin.

Second problem with WRX seats in the Micra:
2 - I now can't get to the tailgate release / fuel flap release lever. I found this out AFTER I bolted everything in tightly. The lever is jammed up against the underside of the RHS seat rail. I'll need to sort this out within the next few days.

VG Auto Paints mixed up the Hyundai Veloster Young Gun Matte Metallic Grey for me in spray packs. The pressure and the spray from these cans were absolutely amazing! They sprayed with plenty of pressure with a nice wide spray pattern. I was really surprised! Not a thin spray pattern like the cans you get off the shelf.

Masking removed and so far, it looks like this. No washing, sanding or anything else as yet.
I'm not fussed about the red you see around the window frame as that will be covered by the window rubber.

I will always have fond memories of my Super S Micra.

I will miss you little one ;-(
