external coil fitting tomorrow |

I have owned my micra for almost 2 years and it has been good to me in that time. Last week on the M4 i lost my spark without warning. I traced it to the good ol micra dizzy. I still have power at the right plug sockets so its either the coil has earthed out or the CAS aint playing the game. It always happens when ya broke. $70 for or a replacement or this hyundai one for $0. It should give slight power increase i hope.

Yeah no problems. All depends on this so called power transistor being that and not a condenser. Otherwise I have to work out the 3 pins on the Hyundai transistor and it should be a direct replacement because this coil shouldnt need the power kick from the condenser because it can switch fast enough to spike the voltage in the coil with 12v I think that's right.

This is the diagram Frank sent me you may be able to figure it out with this. I think the resistor is the one located outside the dizzy. Not 100% sure though. Frank should be able to give you a definite answer.

green goes to the 2 pin plug on the loom blue coil. blk&wht to condenser. the 2nd pin on the condenser has another blk& wht wire to the 2nd pin on th dual plug. the third wire in the drawing on the condenser isto ground which is its mounting bracket. will check tomorrow blk& wht should be 12v

" yes, when i labeled all my wires from that big 1.9 mb pinout diag (to run a nats car on a non nats ecu) this was narrowed down as the resistor my guess is that the transistor ramps up the signal ampage from the ecu, so that it as sufficient current to trigger the coil and maybe the resistor is like the old k10 ballast resistor system that increases the spark during startup ? |

Thanks Frank. I will have to rip out the multimeter again coz I'm using a transistor so I only want 12v I think. I have the transistor with the new coil so I just have to wire it with 12v coz this coil creates its own power spike by cutting the power to the primary. If it switches fast enough then no power needs to be fed to it. Just trial and error. Or as I put it R&D. I think the resistor is to stop current flowing the wrong way to protect the ecu. I'm pretty sure it is 12v to the coil when we checked the blk & why at the 2 pin plug

so are we assuming that the 2 black wires are earths, the g/b wire is a 5v feed for the optical sensor, the shielded white wire is the optical sensor signal to the ecu, the r/y is the computed signal wire from the sparkmap/ecu to the transistor (that triggers the coil)
and the 2 wire plug is, lg/b backflow protection, and w/g 12v coil feed daniel ? |

Yep spot on. The resistor I think is a ballast resistor for the spark returning to the coil to complete the cycle. Is this what you mean by backflow prevention?

" i guess so :) according to autodata the feed to the optical sensor is 12v (G/B wire) and 5v fluctuating between pins # 1 and 3, and they list that 6 pin plug as going to the "ignition amplifier" here are the resistance figures for those pinouts |

Yes which is the condenser or capacitor which won't be needed with this coil. Micra ignitions are like old technology for efi. I don't know if I need it to take excess charge so the coil doesn't overcharge between cycles and earth out on the secondary. I might just try it. The coil was free. All else give in and buy a new one. I always wanted to try it I just wasn't expecting now.

First try I will join the coil same way but externally.
Wires already extended through the grommet. Condenser disconnected and replaced with transistor 3 pin plug. 2 wires like the condenser and a third to ground because the transistor isn't grounded. 0-5v signal wire and ground and 12v need to goto the switch. |

All the boys using msd and stuff like that need igniters and that is like what the condenser does, it fires a charge intp the primary to make the spark fired from the secondary bigger with less time needed to charge the coil . This is a cdi ignition - capacitor discharge ignition but I am changing to tsi - transistor switched ignition. The coils work different. If you remove the capacitor without changing coils rpm would be limited due to coil charge time. Charge too quick, bye bye coil. There's so much to it I'm just gonna go it.

Well it's taking longer than I expected but I think I have the wiring sorted. It took a while to work out the wiring because to activate the transistor the low voltage current needs to be supplied to the "base". So I thought I had 4 wires. Not quite right. The base is one of the three terminals supplying the signal voltage. The other side is 12v which is the collector marked "OC". The middle marked "G" is to ground. The 12v and signal voltage both travel toward each other to the transistor where they both share a common ground. This was confusing seeing power heading toward each other until I understood the switch. So the plan is laid, now let's see.

thanks Frank its a bit of a challenge but i will be the guy that pulls it off or the guy who publicly fails. lol. if i cant get it i will buy a dizzy and keep the modded cap for another go later. Got rego in 3 weeks so i got about a week or 2 and its gotta be running. After rego i can do it right coz i need the right wire for the high amp low voltage and vice versa

I have canned the project. Unpaid fines no licence rego suspended. Going cheap $250.
Only has one side window, brand new windscreen 2 weeks ago for $220. Original rear. Needs tyres and maybe passenger CV for rego. |
