Front door speaker size

Tue 29 Jan 2013 11:46:29 PM
Just double checking that the front door speakers are 6 and a half inches in size? Also has anyone had any trouble with the width when installing aftermarket speakers?

hi pete i just installed aftermarket speakers in front doors they were 6inch component very easy install, Iv hurd you can put 6.5inch in cos the actual frame is still 6inch but the speaker sits out .5 of an inch more personaly i would stick to 6inch and mayby buy a couple more screws just incase :)

If by width you are referring to the depth that the speaker sits in the door?

I think you want to keep it to about 55mm, best bet is to pull out one of the old ones and use it as a guide and when you do install the new speaker do it with the window down just to double check.

There is a bit of a gap if you use a 6" so that should also help with any depth issues as you can move the speaker over a little bit

The thing is that I've already ordered the speakers and they are 6 and a half inch and 59mm in depth. How do you think I'll go?

if they dont fit could always buy a spacer, or grind the hole a bit bigger, i know the SLX have a heap of room between the speaker & the grille so could easily fit a spacer, not sure about 3-door models as ive never pulled a door trim off.

I mounted 6.5's (Jaycar 'Response' Splits) in the doors of my Series 1 LX and needed to space them out from the original mounts by ~10mm. Was able to modify the original grill to accommodate the new speakers but I'd say it isn't going to be a bolt-in affair for you.

Yeah I can see that there is going to be a bit of modifying needed to fit them in. I will probably use a spacer. I'm in a 95 LX by the way.

yah pete, you need spacers for 6.5" speakers. I just fabricated new door cards (youtube is your friend). I'm happy I went the extra mile. but just make some mdf spacers and it should be fine.

Also, the inner diameter of the back of my 6.5" speakers did not fit in the aeropro 6" spacer from supercheap, so take a speaker down for fitting if you're not sure :D

EDIT: also I'm pretty sure most 6.5" speakers don't clear the 3 door speaker hole depth (2 brands didn't clear mine)
