Mal's K11 + TD04 build

Mon 19 Mar 2012 06:19:22 PM
Howdy all, only recently got into the Micra fold when I purchased a 1996 K11 as a cheap runabout to work. My girlfriend has a K12 which made looking for cheap economical cars lead to Micra's ;)

Anyway, its to save this beast and try and look after it better with less km's etc:

2004 Mk4 R32

So I picked up the Micra, has the JDM cupholder option which I'm told is pretty desireable! Had a cold air intake (well filter sat over the top of the exhaust mani!)Glad it's 5sp manual!

And took a few snaps

The car has noisey lifters but I wasn't worried initially. Then looking for "where to get Micra spares if..." I came across this site.

The girlfriend moved to Orange so making trips out that way (suited the purchase) I found some goodies outside of Windsor ;)

You'll spot a spare CG13DE, manual 5spd gearbox, 2 driveshafts and a set of headers. Spares indeed!

No clutch or flywheel (or flywheel bolts or gearbox bolts so need to acquire those)

I was planning on rebuilding the standard CG as a big of a fun, cheap project (I'm a fitter but normally do Hydraulic work, so was looking forward to some different experience) but have since decided I'll just strap this:

onto the space CG13 and see how it goes. It's a TD04L off a WRX 2L and I got it for $100 bucks. I'm doing this as cheapily as possible for sure.

Main objective is decent torque to go over the blue mountains, I dont like revving the freckle out of the little Micra!

Re: Mal's K11 + TD04 build

I was planning on making a manifold out of the headers and buying flanges for the exhaust mani and dump pipe to suit a TD04, but late on Friday afternoon decided to use the standard cast exhaust mani instead, so went about installing the headers.

-No idea what brand they are?
-Wasn't too hard to install myself, only really required removal of the alternator.
-One stud has no nut on it (the lower right one when looking at the flange from the front of the car as there was no clearance left (even after filing the washer down to fit in there)
-I have plenty of leaks but I decided to do it at 4 o clock on Friday afternoon so haven't replaced the gaskets, will head to an exhaust shop hopefully this friday and get the gaskets replaced.

All fitted up

Flanges have been ordered and should be here this week so I can start planning this build.

Re: Mal's K11 + TD04 build

Mon 19 Mar 2012 06:36:05 PM
I'll keep searching and try and find a good option but if anyone reads this and has some suggestions on the following, glad to listen:

- replacement injectors (OEM replacement SR20 DE/DET??)
- adjustable fuel pressure regulator?
- ECU tuning (e-manage/stinger/nistune/any tricks to not need ECU stuff?)
-boost limit on standard (used) motor? planning on 6-8 psi and good mid range, not outright horsepower
-type of intercooler setup??

My intercooler idea was to get an RX7/S chassis Nissan/GTIR cooler and mount it next to the radiator. Point the compressor outlet down and do a 180 degree turn into the bottom of the cooler, hen out of the top of the cooler over the motor into the throttle body, but am open to suggestions.

Cheers, Mal

my n/a cammed 1311 had about 45hp @ 3k and 109hp @ 7k, this current GT15 gives about 90hp @ 3k and the same 110 ish @ 7k
i guess a TD04 will give far more top-end (similar to asdame,s 165hp) but will take a bit longer to spool eh

I think you made more than that Frank. We made ~50bhp @ 3k on stock compression and I am sure your dyno pull showed plenty more torque below 4k with your high comp 1311 ;) (can't find the blasted graphs though <- FAIL!) :P

Doubling torque at any rpm is good though :)

you could be right mate, the latest graph i have was the AOC group dyno, which was before i fitted the QG injectors (the guy never sent the 109hp dyno session graph :( )

personally, i dont think the little 40mm CG crank journals are man enough for regular 150+ hp punishment (unless you pamper it with top quality engine oil and frequent changes)

I'm aiming for about 80-90 front wheel kilowatt, so max 130 wheel horsepower.
Though, I only plan on running 8-10 psi, that's more important than outright power figure. The added torque of the turbo is what won it for me over the SR20DE conversion.

Really the only thing doing my head in is squirters.
Really want to avoid custom fuel rails to fit SR injectors, so I suppose that also helps limit me to 8-10 psi on the TD04.

I know GA16 injectors fit, so high flow them and might just use them for what they are good for and leave it at that. Unless there are other suggestions?

aye, stani is sending his fuelrail to my local tig welder eh mal, i,ll fire some pics up when its done.
i think you will be maxxing out 198cc GA16 injectors personally (most members seem to go for the 370cc SR20 det ones eh)
you could run them with a 5th injector, similar to mine eh, easy to fit, and it means that off boost the fuelling runs pretty much as stock (nice idle and good milage) mine just runs from a button on the gearknob lol :)

Re: Mal's K11 + TD04 build

i had a td04 on my car in its first incarnation. no lag at all, i actually found it annoying that it was on boost all the time. definately no lag if thats what your aim is. wouldn't bother with any injector that fits into the stock rail, they just won't flow enough. sr fuel rails really arent that hard to modify anyway. shoot kovert a pm, he's got one of mine that i'm pretty sure he might be getting rid of if you prefer to buy one rather then muck around making your own. don't use an emanage, they won't do what you want, and there have been a bulk amount fail. adjustable fuel reg is a good idea, allthough not really mandatory if your on a budget. as long as you have big enough injectors you won't need one, and if your injectors are too small, adjusting the pressure won't gain you that much flow out of them anyway. any intercooler setup that will fit with the shortest piping for minimal lag. ep82/91 starlet coolers are quite small and could probably fit quite well in a micra. ecu, id stick with a stinger, cheap, easy to wire in and will do what you want it to easily. max boost, 10psi seems to be the limit with a mediocre tune. 15+ if you've got a decent setup and good tuner. lifters don't normally get noisy on a micra, its ussually the timing chain tensioners etc.

Got all the knowledgable guys in here helping, cheers!

Brilliant, I want a streetable package so minimal lag is what I'm after. Just secured an S13 Silvia side mount intercooler whichl ooks like it should be perfect!

Will PM kovert and see what he has going as fair as rails and injectors, cheers for that also.

Stinger ECU is ~ 1500? + wiring and then tuning I'd imagine.

I can understand the chain guides/tensioner as my VR6's (MK3 VR6 and Mk4 R32 have timing chains and you only worry about them when they rattle). Makes sense, more or less regurgitated the previous owner.

Really liking making "progress" with this. All up I'm estimating to boost this will cost the same as my R32 exhaust (Milltek full system) so making me happy atm haha!

Is Nistune worth it?

Have got mates with goold results on pulsars (one is a N15 SSS with a U13 SR20DET and GT2871R, just made 190 @ 16psi injectors max duty cycle, the other one has an N15 SSS with SR20VE and hybrid cams (20V low lobe, N1 high lobe, not dyno'd/tuned yet but it goes pretty darned well and seems like tuners like to use it)

If you're after response, I have a GT forester turbo lying around that you can have for free if you come pick it up on a weekend. It'll hit boost lower down than the td04, but has the same flange.

Also I have an e-manage blue and profec e-01 boost controller that i'll sell dirt cheap if you're interested in going that route for tuning. Let me know if you're interested.

S15 Standard Injectors, Fuel Rail And Wiring Harness

Good option for modified fuel rail? Whats the expected cost and how does that compare to getting a custom rail made up to suit SR20DET injectors?

It will be tighter than a nun's nasty I'm thinking but hope it will work. Damn I hope I can get it to work haha.
Probably relocate the horns and mount the cooler off the horn bracket + other associated tapped holes/threaded studs around the place.

With the horns gone it'll be up much higher :) you can just see it (sorry about pics, its getting dark here)

Hopefully won't have too many dramas with the NISMO cluster. Fuel sender should be ok, temperature sender, meh I'm most worried about fuel, tacho, speed and lights. If I can't find a "JDM temp sensor".

Will just get a temp gauge to go with boost gauge. Better than an external tacho easy.

according to kovert.k11:

"In order to use it you'll need to splice into the existing wiring and rewire into the JDM harnesses...same deal for fuel sender"

I took that as fuel sender is different between JDM and UK, that's why he sent it so I can get it to work. I would still have thought that at the dash end you'd still have a signal for fuel level and coolant temp, so that should still be able to made to work on the JDM dash. If that makes sense. But apparently not. So this is how we going about it

i've got a nismo dash cluster in my car. you'll need to chop off all the original plugs and use the ones he supplied you with. . didn't know the cluster was shapped differently to the aus/uk micra versions. fits no worries at all. good luck wiring the shit up. was a nightmare. yes you'll have to use the jdm fuel sender also. same as the coolant temp sender.

I don't have coolant temp sender. Was if it's too much of a bitch to find a JDM one I'll just go with an external coolant temp sender.
I got bare wires, no plugs :(

Dad is an auto lecco, so hopefully he can give me a hand, will use terminals most likely. Try and label everything for "Ease"

Don't mind that, its costing me $100 AUD if I take it, have the standard exhaust mani here with a flange, + my new flanges from kinugawa turbo so should have enough to make a little manifold up. :)

Just ordered a "universal' 2" intercooler piping kit from 999 Automotive :)

Just need a 2.75" > 2" reducer (throttle body) and I should have all the boost piping I need. Just manifold and dump pipe.

After that, tidy up spare engine, full service of that, new clutch, will get the flywheel that is in the car machined.

Tomei metal head gasket (0.5mm) ?? Found a gasket shop on ebay too, they have a standard one. Plus exhaust and intake mani gaskets, rocker cover gaskets and a few other bits and pieces

.5mm is a bit small for boost? And be running a bit high then normal with compresssion, you would want to try and Tomei only stock .7mm metal head gaskets, a few fellows on here are running standard or double standard head gaskets for boost they want

Think I'll go the double standard when I do it. More a "safe than sorry" kind of thing.

I know assuming is the "mother of all f ups" but I bought the motor and gearbox on good premise that it was healthy so may just see how it goes first eh

tbh the calculations tally with the (flat-top and 63mm stroke) 1.0 calculations if you use 25cc for the chamber and 7.5cc for the 1.3 dish dave.
the numbers i posted were from using a syringe and are probably + or - about 10% eh

Vistited a shop here to organise the fuel rail and explained the project, they basically hated it,

Hated my turbo choice and said it would be laggy as all ####, just get a T25.
My SR20DET injectors are "too much work to make fit" even custom fuel rails and all that, so they are useless. So top feed might be the way to go. Pretty disappointed.
Enquired about manifolds, they want 3k for inlet and exhaust mani + new AFM and throttle body
Then dump pipe
Then Haltech (bagged the crap out of EMS Stinger)
Didnt agree with turbo placement or intercooler placement either.

Am going to go back through your thread, but could you post up your photo bucket link or something?
So yeah, feeling pretty disappointed...

thinking about copying Stani's glanza manifold idea and running with that now.

Fuelling, no hard and fast info really on what needs to be done to make what injectors fit. I have Side feed SR20DET ones, apparently they are useless for making a custom fuel rail. So start again with fuel. Grrrr

lol. thats pretty much the same response i got when i started turbo'ing my red car! every workshop was like wtf, a micra. pfffttt why bother. set out to do it myself and now no one knows what to say lol.

*what was there justification for using a t25? and how will a td04 be laggy? hard to say by not knowing which t25 they are refering too as there are a bunch to chose from, but the run on the mill nissan t25 has bigger wheels and housings then a forester/wrx td04, even on paper it will spool faster. a little different but my vf30 wasn't laggy AT ALL on the stock engine. if anything i'd say a td04 is too small, but should see you through to a 100kw quite easily with plenty of low down grunt

*sr20det injectors and rail are easy as to make fit, it just requires time and half a brain, custom fuel rails are even easier, but there's absolutely no need to go topfeed, at your power level, even at 300rwkw the sidefeed design is more then sufficient at supplying enough fuel flow

*that's pretty keen, is it gold plated? why they giving you a new afm when they are reccomending a haltech?

*is that because they retail haltech and arent an ems dealer? lol. ems stinger will do more then what you want and beyond.

take your car and your idea somewhere else if thats the response you got.

finally, leave the headgasket alone unless you plan to run 15psi all day long, or tune it yourself.

^ thank fook. S13 180SX/GTIR/Bluebird then. Good cheers!

Thanks for the positive comments too!

Forgot to add,

You should use a 50 shot of NOS to help spool up the turbo

Righttttt.

Good confidence knowing turbo isn't "Too big" and that injectors will be just fine when I find a rail to mod.
Id assume cut and re-weld (braze?) to suit the hole centres

So thats a rail to suit side feed SR20DET injectors MickB?

How much would you want for it? Postcode is 2323.

See that option, failing that look at the CGA option (pretty sure can still use same squirters eh Frank?)

You Micra guys are so helpful, thanks a heap! (try and read build threads but people ask different questions and have different methods and budgets)....then read so much without actually making a decision and doing something you can second guess....but thanks again lads!

Unsure if I want to sell it :)
It is my backup option (plenum and rail), if I want to run a legitimate setup (motorbike carbs is the first option).

RTK - no seat rails mate. Am going to Mulholland regardless, just offered on the rail due to that :)

Frank - what injectors can you fit in the CGA topfeed rail?

Just teasing me hey? There is a 180SX rail on ebay im looking at atm

All the Nismo, Sard, ID etc injectors can be used I would think but there would be no point (flow overkill (Nismo 550's?) fuel pump to support it, pretty sure intake mani setup and throttle body would be a problem so change all that. Side feed will be plenty enough for 8-10 psi I would think (Good enough on a SR20DET pulsar with a T25/T28 and >10psi anyway).

Just bought 2 of these kits (double headgasket if mine goes) and helps me out with manifolds etc if I have to take them on or off.
New rocker cover gasket so I can take this one off and clean it up :)
http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1//1?icep_ff3=2&toolid=10001&campid=5337873294&icep_item=130293697116

And copying Stani here:
http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1//1?icep_ff3=2&toolid=10001&campid=5337873294&icep_item=400164231279

Sizing it up and measuring, my manifolf just wasn't getting the turbo high enough to clear the alternator. So this will help.

Boost piping from 999 Automotive just got delivered too :)

ooh, taking shape now mal :) the topfeeds are more of a generic shape, which has more options from other cars (mine are circa 2000 sr ones)

Those pipes look heaps to big! And that manifold will need to be cut, and a micra flang weld on if you don't already know!

It is my backup option (plenum and rail), if I want to run a legitimate setup (motorbike carbs is the first option).

RTK - no seat rails mate. Am going to Mulholland regardless, just offered on the rail due to that :)

Frank - what injectors can you fit in the CGA topfeed rail?"

"

550's are massive overkill! i used 370's in mine and got to a 150kw +. stock sr20de should be fine, det if you wana be safe. that stainless manifold might actually work pretty well. make sure you put some decent brackets off the dump to the block and flex joint right after it or you'll be forever cracking the manifold.

Well Im pretty much copying this effort RTK,

requires spacing the alernator out and getting a longer belt but small problem in comparison I think. Might try and get the turbo flange a little bit higher (possibly to the right aswell) and may not have to do that.
He's using a modded RB25 rail and injectors.

Please do over FB. Linky me. The pipework is 2". Not big at all. I can work out its for a Toyota and not a Micra and the manifold wont bolt on directly lol.

I agree. That's why I'm using the SR20 side feeds (well DET ones). Was going to flex pipe anyway, but didn't think about brackets to the block. Cheers

And now have these in my posession :)

Fronts: 16x7 +35
Rears: 16x8 +38

Should fit quiet well I think, worst case will be inner clearances but they wont go on till it's been lowered, sway bars etc..well I think thats the way anyway. Got a motor to do first...

Nice little write up.mate, looking forward to seeing how it turns out =}
Your rims in the gold (but with polished lip) would be nice (and different) but black with polished lip (gives it a panda look lol) looks tuff..need a nismo grille =}

Sorry for lack of updates recently, was really trying to get good progress with this.

Have been working 12 hour shifts and maintaining relationship with the girlfriend who is 6 hours away so pretty time restrained atm.

doing 6 shifts for one off now till mid June so nothing happening until then :(

In saying that, Golf has been traded in on something Jap ;) well application etc is all going through ATM, but should be a nice cruiser and pretty comfortable. Picked up a white manual JZX110 Mark II Chaser :)

Catch ya later and hopefully more updates in the coming weeks!

Well, I've really lost interest in this and my grand plan of a hillclimb/circuit car on the cheap really has a few flaws...

One of the major parts of that is that I just don't "love" the little Micra like other cars I have had previousl and therefore with the increasing costs I have decided I should just sell my spares/aftermarket bits and keep a reliable daily, so basically everything bar the spare motor (stripped atm) should be available for sale.
Only need to modify one flange, modify SR20 fuel rail (performance shop should do it pretty easily), get a 6mm longer alternator belt and make intake/dump pipe and it would run.

Turbo Stuff (would prefer to sell all together)

TD04L turbo (off 2L WRX)
Oil& Water lines/fittings/gaskets/flanges etc from Kinugawa turbo
Toyosport Starlet GT manifold to suit TD04
Toyosport Starlet GT dump pipe
Stainless plate to make manifold to head flange and weld on (pretty easy to do)
Nissan 180SX fuel rail, injctors and adjustable FPR (+4 cleaned SR20DET injectors from an S14 I believe)
S13 side mount intercooler
999 Automotive 2" piping + silicon joiners + clamps
>>>> $1500 ono <<<<

NISMO cluster + JDM fuel sender (bought from Kovert)$350

Spare CG13DE manual gearbox and driveshafts (I have never used nor tested)$250

Happy to organise postage at buyers expense

Disappointed in a way but think that money could be better put in savings to buy a house and look at a track car later on down the track. Hard to balance everyhing you want/need to do when you are 22 :(

Can contact me on 0410 326 109, please message as I am a nightworker
