Nissan CG10 DET in Austin Mini (Trinidad and Tobago)

Wed 15 Jul 2009 11:58:30 AM
well guys after hi-jacking alienfish's thread concerning an ecu:.......

http://www.micra.com.au/community/message.php?messageid=45940

i've decided to open a thread to share with y'all our install of a 16valve turbo micra engine in our Austin Mini:

we have done many 8v micra conversions and have recently started doing the CG series. Our work can also be seen here:

http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=57644

a little history.
this is the fourth engine ever installed in this car in the last two years! so far its had a nissan MA10 with 4 2 1 headers and a five speed:

this was then upgraded to a nissan CG13 but carbd using a hybrid manifold and distributor:

after having alot of fun with this engine we installed it in another of our friend's cars: a mini clubman

we moved on to a toyota 4E engine but retained the nissan gearbox for simplicity:

until here we are, we decided it was time to go EFI so its back to the bullet-proof nissan cg10 engine! heres a photo of it just before dropping in for install...

more details to come.......

it really doesn't get more home-made than this:

. Standard japanese-spec CG10DE engine
. SR-20 internal fuel pump
. rev-limiter removed
. Aisin (RHB35 i believe) water cooled turbocharger from daihatsu mira
. standard CG10 injectors with 5th CG10 injector drilled into throttle-body
. GE pressure switch (0-10 psi.) set to 2-3 psi. ON.
. A/F and Boost gauges.
. Subaru EJ20 turbo fuel pressure regulator.
. 3-4 degrees static timing retard
. CG13 ECU (less ignition advance)
. 2" downpipe front to rear
. 6 psi wastegate actuator
. bleed valve (achieves no more than 8psi)
. NGK heat range '7' spark plugs
. HKS ssqv blow off valve
. standard manifold cast welded to flange and ported, gussets added.

yet to be added:
. suzuki samaurai intercooler (from tmic to fmic)
. cg13 cams and buckets

these are photos of the engine before it was boosted. notice the GA15 airbox due to the alternator being relocated:

the engine ran very well before
boost and gained alot of low end torque because of
backpressure
thru the turbo manifold.
it was impressive, we then fabricated the boost pipe
so that we could start sorting fuel tuning.
our aim was to get it to work without management or
even a remap!
our initial idea was that ga15
injectors would suffice but this made the car bog down
and idle poorly and lean out when going into more than 2 psi.
we reverted to original injectors but relocated
the maf thinking that it would help meter the air
accurately and the ecu would do the rest.......wrong
again, it cut out due to lost air via the BOV but this
time leaned out at 3-4 psi. it was at this point we
decided to keep standard injectors and use the fifth.
off boost the car drives normally until 2psi where
the 5th injector pulses and boost comes in really hard,
the A/F is slightly rich above stoich throughout boost
and i am very happy with the whole thing.

so what do you guys think??

That's awesome. I don't know how else to describe it. Interesting paintjob I must say.. very unique ;) Was much required to bolt up the micra box to the 4E-series engine?

Looks like you're using every square inch in the engine bay to fit it all in. Nice work.

Is there any reason you didn't go for the CG13? as it's identical in size.

it was surprisingly easy, the machinist
redrilled the micra flywheel to suit
the toyota bolt pattern. we then found
the centres of both the toyota and nissan
sandwich plates, lined them up and redrilled
the block to accept the two dowels and
four-bolt nissan pattern. flywheels something
like this:

this engine is awesome!!!!
never expected this from a 1000cc. i've had a cg13 in
the same car so i can tell u its on par with it, its just
the power delivery is very different. u turbo guys shud
kno what i'm talkin about! its all meek and humble until.......
BANG!! it switches onto boost and the injector pulses.
boost is awesome. there really is no other feeling like it.

and yes i'm soon gonna fit the IC just behind the grille
right in front my engine no. in the pics. its really important
not only because we're in the tropics but cg compression is more than 9.5, i'm running 8psi.

Alienfish360 WROTE:

its really funny. i had a cg10 and this cute turbo
just lying around so we said why not? did i mention
the turbo's really small?!
just taking it a little at a time, i've already
collected phase 2 of this project: japanese cg13de,
ga15 throttlebody and t25 turbo already......
they really say once u go turbo there's no way back!

great project for next year!!

from TMF:
the alternator bracket and the roller is custom. u need
the roller to get the belt away from the tower and keep
enough belt on the water pump pulley when you really
punch the X. this must be done outside the engine bay
to ensure that it is true plus fabrication is ALOT easier.
the roller is a 2inch flat roller and the belt we used was
a 4PK1160 but yours is likely to be different. heres a pic.

in this install i managed to take a pic of the bracket.
there is also an extra spar from the manifold to this
bracket that is unseen in this pic:

Alienfish, ur thinking of doing this to locate ur
turbo easier in front aren't you!?

Very well going there, Bigchief.
I like the thought of not needing a remap/dedicated fuel control system (If not for anything else, then at least with regard to the money needed/possible hassle due to this)

Could you elaborate somewhat with regard to
' ...with 5th CG10 injector drilled into throttle-body
. GE pressure switch (0-10 psi.) set to 2-3 psi. ON.
- injector pulsed by distributor signal (from 'the alienfish ecu thread')

Pictures, further description etc.
Do you have thoughts if 2 or more extra injectors, possible each with their own pressure switch, could be done? (for a CG13DE system)?

i dont have photos of the fifth injector, but its really quite simple. in the clear portion below the MAF on the firewall side of the throttlebody a hole was drilled and 1/4 of an injector rail was added using metric taps etc so that the injector just bolts in and the fuel line is 'teed' onto the main rail. hope that helps but u can google 5th injector for more info.
pressure switches or hobbs' switches are available for purchase from some hydraulic shops and can be adjusted to the psi where you begin to run lean on your standard injectors, switching on ur 5th to add desired fuel. depending on fuel pressure and injector size this is completely hit and miss.
the negative or 'tach' pulse from the dizzy is what pulses the injector. again you must research if ur injector is high impedence or not when using this method. also using the dizzy means that its being pulsed twice for every rotation of the crank whereas the other injectors are pulsed once every other rotation. i was lucky using this setup as i run only slightly rich when on boost. i dont think more than one extra injector is needed, maybe ur fifth injector cud be from the GA engine. it all depends on ur turbo, how much boost and compression. hope that helps.

just thought y'all would like to see a standard
K11 engine instal that we completed recently.
from The Mini Forum:

we are really pleased with the quality of this
install and the owner was blown away too. the
engine is extremely nimble and revs quite freely.
the tach just flings around at hits the limiter
with ease! the power delivery is VERY different
to a mini or even MA engine and with the headers
it sounds like a VTEC screamer. i will try to do
a video so u guys can hear what i mean exactly.
just picture pigeons flying away in all directions
and frightened pedestrians fleeing in horror.
heheh.......heh.
heres pics of the install :

gotta love sideways brakes [patent pending]

just some shots from the install,
we sized down some rover K-series
headers to fit by cutting off the
flanges and first bolting them to the head:

we ended up with this:

the pipes are then adjusted for fit and tacked
in position before removing. after preliminary welding:

this is how well they fit the block:

note that these headers are not equal length so
the pipes containing cylinders 2 and 3 come together
a longer way down below the engine to make up for it .
we removed the bulky rover flange too, they sound
really great when the throttle is> half open,
otherwise the car is really quiet!!

ok..........well you guys got me excited once again.
i must share with you our latest installation.
it is an actual upgrade on his MA10 engine which has gone strong for the last three years.
he has chosen to stay 1000cc.
going with the 16valve CG10.
he has had the manifold made using that of his last engine as well as the dizzy.
as usual here are some teaser shots as my friend has not yet seen the final install either:

So...........i know i've been
absent for quite a while.
My car has been boosted for
almost a year and a half and
had absolutely no problems to date,
in fact i have finally decided to
add an intercooler since i found
a cute little one last week:

Its from a daihatsu mira also, and has allowed me to run 10 psi boost alot safer now :D.

Lovely work mate! No long time ago i saw that project on the Mini forum while i was looking for some info on the 4-2-1 exhaust manifold for the CG13DE!

BTW, do you have the dimension of that 4-2-1 exhaust manifold by any means written down anywhere from that NA Mini? Thanks!

hi mate! was wondering what dizzy you used on the cg13 hybrid carby/dizzy? my cg10 is also a carby conversion but used a modified toyota 4KU dizzy.. sadly the vacuum advancer has an opposite rotation ang makes the timing retard instead of advancing.. so had to use the stock efi dizzy for now.

Thanks Grev and Akinari...
I've done two carb'd CGs using the distributor from an MA10 Micra engine:

If you can get hold of the distrubutor sleeve from an A series Mini engine, that would work well as an adaptor: it has the exact depth and inner diameter to suit the MA10 dizzy, only a small bit of the outer diameter needs to be turned down. This distributor has very aggressive advance and is very suitable to the CG engine! The 8valve Sunny and Pulsar (E13/15) will work as well.

Thanks a lot for the info! well minis are extremely rare here in the Philippines.. its an import that will cost a bundle! ..I tried looking at a dizzy from the old GA13 but was too big for the cg.. E13/15 dizzy will be easier to find since there a re a lot of sunnys around here..

Thanks again!

Loved how the CG fits on the mini.. I guess batteries sitting at the back..

i see.. well it does show that i have no clue what a minis engine bay looks like.. hehe

if im not mistaken the ga13 dizzy is big and might have to do a lot of machining work for it to fit.. its maybe almost a year since my bud got the dizzy from me so i forgot what it looks like.. ima get a pic of a ga13 dizzy soon to show you..

Aki
