K11 electromagnetic clutch

Fri 24 Oct 2008 01:08:34 PM
Hi, We have a K11 (Dec 95, CVT drive). Its done 280,000Km with little problem and is much loved.
The other day the NCVT light came on but the car kept going. At the next stop the gear shift moved but gears did not engage. After calling NRMA later, the gears engaged and drove normally (fault light still on) and I was able to drive it to our mechanic.
He has not had much help from local Nissan or automatic specialist guys who say its too hard and would be happy to write the car off (it's still in good condition, doesn't burn a drop of oil). The mechanic says it may be a computer fault. I'm guessing it is a fault with the electromagnetic clutch.
So, can any of you fellow Micra / K11 appreciaters help please. Thanks, Andy & Pari

The following should put the automatic (N-CVT) gearbox into its self diagnostic test, helping you narrow down any problems youre experiencing.

Self Diagnostic Method:

1. Keeping the ignition off and all pedals released move the selector / gear lever to the "D" position.

2. Turn ignition on - but dont start the vehicle.

3. Depress and hold brake pedal, then fully depress and hold the accelerator pedal.

4. Then move the selector / gear lever in the following order: Ds - D - N - R - P

5. Release the accelerator pedal, then the brake.

6. Start the car...(gear lever still in "P")

7. The N-CVT dashboard warning light will start to blink, count them and compare with the fault code list below)

8. Switch off ignition to stop self diagnostic procedure.

-----------------------------------------------------

The fault code output blinks are made up as follows:

No fault found: There is a 2 second pause, followed by the light remaining on for 2 seconds and then 7 short on/off second blinks.

If a fault is detected one of these 7 short blinks will remain on longer than the others.

Fault Code 1 - The first blink is on longer than the others - Accelerator or accelerator position switch circuit is short circuited or diconnected.

Fault Code 2 - The second blink is on longer than the others - Inhibit switch circuit is short circuited or diconnected.

Fault Code 3 - The third blink is on longer than the others - Vehicle speed sensor circuit is short circuited or diconnected.

Fault Code 4 - The fourth blink is on longer than the others - electro-magnetic clutch coil circuit is short circuited or diconnected.

Fault Code 5 - The fifth blink is on longer than the others - Line pressure solenoid circuit is short circuited or diconnected.

Fault Code 6 - The sixth blink is on longer than the others - Torque signal circuit is short circuited or diconnected.

Fault Code 7 - The seventh blink is on longer than the others - ABS signal or idle up relay circuit is short circuited or diconnected.

Fault Code No Number - Lamp blinks at 4Hz repeatedly - Battery supply fault or memory back-up fault.

Fault Code No Number - Lamp does not blink - Check all components.

-----------------------------------------------------

Ive tested this procedure myself on our own auto micra and it works so save yourself the cost of getting nissan to diagnose your N-CVT fault by doing it yourself.

Should be suitable for testing all K11 Micra N-CVT gearboxes, maybe even other nissan automatics.?

hope it helps.

Fault 4 for ours was worn brushes (assumed fault as one was very worn)...but its also developed another fault, which so far seems to be low powder in the electro clutch...either the above way should give you something to look for :)

280,000kms out of the CVT is awesome! Here I am at 88k worried that it could die anyday even though it runs like a dream.

i found this instructon on haynes

inspect the brushes. if hey are worn down to the limit lines, or if they do not move smoothly in their holders, renew the brush holder assembly note: be careful not to damage the brush supply leads when checking the brushes for free movement.

Hi,i'm wondering if anyone can help me.I have 2000 Micra 1.0 CVT that is very sluggish taking away in first from a stand still,it changes up and down at all other times perfectly.I performed the self diagnostic test as outlined above, but the N-CVT light will not come on? i have noticed that after performing the test, the car runs perfectly for several days, and then goes back to being sluggish, any ideas? i have been told by someone that the car is in ''limp mode''?
